Electric car sales in Europe rose 37.3% in January, but overall car sales fell 2.1% due to declines in petrol and diesel vehicles. According to ACEA data, Tesla sales fell 45.2% in Europe, while Chinese rival MG, owned by SAIC Motor, saw a 36.8% rise. EU carmakers, pressured by Chinese and U.S. competition and U.S. tariffs, are urging the EU Commission to relax CO2 emission penalties effective since January.
A few weeks ago, the European Commission gathered key industry leaders, social partners, and stakeholders to launch the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of the European Automotive Industry. During the meeting, the EC President acknowledged the challenges facing the sector mentioned as above, as well as factory closures, job cuts. Additional concerns include Europe's reliance on China for critical minerals and batteries. Automakers also debated whether the EU should waive potential fines for producers failing to meet CO2 emissions targets this year, though some argued this could hinder EV development. Instead, they suggested focusing on expanding charging infrastructure and accelerating battery R&D. And all maybe answered by EU executive’s auto sector plans on March 5th.
What are comprehensive data on European road transportation decarbonization for 2024 and through 2025? How to build Strategic roadmap for developing EVs, batteries, charging infrastructure, and new technologies in Europe?
