On January 31, 2025, the European Commission approved a €48 million grant for Envision AESC's second battery gigafactory in France, which will supply Renault, following €450 million in support from the European Investment Bank. The facility, with an initial annual capacity of 9 GWh, is part of a €1.3 billion investment. AESC, a global leader in lithium-ion batteries for EVs and energy storage, operates across the U.S., U.K., Europe, Japan, and China, serving clients like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Nissan, and is backed by prominent shareholders such as Nissan and Envision Energy.

In contrast, solid-state batteries (SSB) are making significant strides recently, with Toyota targeting commercial production by 2027–2028, promising 621 miles of range and 80% charging in 10 minutes. Similarly, Mercedes-Benz is advancing SSB technology through a partnership with Factorial Energy, testing its Solstice prototype in a modified EQS sedan and aiming for production integration by 2026. These developments mark a promising leap in battery innovation.

There is no doubt that EV battery technology is still in a stage that requires substantial capital investment. What battery technologies do capital markets favor: management systems, battery packs, solid-state batteries, silicon anodes, electrolyte materials, or others? What are challenges when invest in raw materials mining, refining, ore deposits, and specific resources? Are there any case studies of joint investments: banks, venture capital firms, OEMs, and mining companies?
