On March 5th, 2025, the European Commission (EC) announced a plan to allocate 1.8 billion euros ($1.94 billion) to establish "a secure and competitive" supply chain for battery raw materials. Access to affordable battery minerals has always been a key factor in reducing battery costs.
Currently, factors such as economies of scale, strategic partnerships throughout the supply chain, manufacturing efficiency, and the ability to rapidly introduce innovations to the market will be essential for competing in the EV battery sector. Despite the challenges Europe faces, there remain significant opportunities to accelerate R&D and support European battery manufacturers, which do need large scale of investment.
While during the green transition in the EU, many industries require investment support. Banks, venture capitalists, and other investment organizations need to assess both short-term and long-term ROI. What battery technologies do capital markets favor: management systems, battery packs, solid-state batteries, silicon anodes, electrolyte materials, or others? How Policy and regulatory could support and drive investment in the battery industry? Are there any U.S. experience in battery industry investment and localization helpful for EU?
